Auto Crash Fatal To Paul Burkhart, Submarine Veteran

Home on his first leave, Paul Burkhart, 19, seaman second class, a veteran of submarine warfare in the Pacific, was dead Monday, as the result of injuries received in a motor car accident a week ago. Funeral services for Burkhart, who died Saturday night at Winter General Hospital, will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Assumption Church, and representatives of the Navy will participate in the ceremonies.

John Schmidt Jr., a cousin, was with Burkhart when the motor

A native Topekan, Seaman Burkhart was born here August 28, 1923, and attended the Sacred Heart School, Lyman school and Seaman high school. He joined the Navy December 10, 1940, almost a year before Pearl Harbor. He had been in the submarine service about two and one-half years.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Burkhart; a sister, Louise Burkhart, and a brother, Lawrence Burkhart, all of the home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hefner and Mr. and Mrs. George Gartner, all of Topeka.
